Trade-offs between Center Separation and Shoulder Width Allotment for a Given Roadway Width

Project PDF

Researchers developed a framework that assists practitioners in making decisions on cross sections for new and resurfaced roadway segments.

This project is about designing rural highways in Texas to maximize the cost-benefit given a roadway width. The project explored different facility types such as 4-lane undivided, 4-lane with a two-way left-turn lane, and Super 2 cross-sections. The project involves field studies on operations of these rural facility types and simulation to evaluate the operational benefits of each facility type. The project will also include a safety analysis in the development for guidance on facility type choice for a given cross-section.
